Off The Grid
Phones, cameras, Instagram, Facebook and many other technological advancements consume our daily lives. Now imagine for a second that those pieces are gone - never to exist again. How would you communicate with others? How would you teach future generations to communicate? Technology and social networking make it extremely easy to communicate without much effort, update others on daily activities, and find/keep in contact with the world around us. For this first project, you will be taking a look at these questions, designing camps without the use of technology, creating stories for young children based on conflict.
Essential Questions
1. What are the most effective ways that middle schoolers communicate in 2013?
2. How does society control communication among its members?
3. What is the importance of having conflicts?
4. How do the choices we make affect our relationships?
What you will be doing:
*Reading - You will be reading the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry
*Reflection Journals- You will look at various questions in The Giver and critically reflect on the novel.;
*Overnight Excursion - The 7th and 8th grade class will have an Off The Grid overnight excursion at the end of this project. This will serve as an exhibition of our work, be a time to team build with our class and 8th grade, and, most importantly, serve as a no technology night (WHAT?!?! No cell phones, computers, iPods, etc.).
*Role playing critical discussions - Throughout this project, we will be completing 2 rounds of role-playing critical class discussions. These will be geared towards communication and conflict resolution.
*Conflict children’s book - you will be responsible for creating a choose-your-own-adventure children’s choose your own adventure book with a partner about conflict and creating multiple resolutions.
* Response to Literature Expository Essay- You will be writing a 5 paragraph essay answering reflective questions for The Giver.
What you will be making:
*Writing - You will be working with a group to create a children’s book about how to get along.
*Crew Building Activities - As a class, we will be creating and compiling some of our favorite crew building activities. These will be used on the night of Off The Grid to help start off the year as a new 7th and 8th grade unit.
*Campsites - For the night of Off The Grid, you will be living in your campsite for the evening and night. This means, you and your crew will be building a shelter and supplies to last you through the night - tech and modern advancement free.
